Act Now to Preserve the Sorority Experience for Women to Come!
For 125 years, Alpha Xi Delta has been inspiring and impacting the lives of women, and we know being a member of Alpha Xi provides women social support on campus and prepares them well for life after college.
We also know the sorority experience provides a space that allows women to support, encourage and advocate for each other, and sorority membership is a proven launch pad for women leaders.
In fact, when compared to their non-affiliated peers, sorority women experience:
- Higher graduation rates;
- Gains in science, writing and thinking skills;
- Better emotional support;
- Increased engagement levels in college; and
- Higher levels of community service.
What’s more, we know sorority membership is highly desirable to women. The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), of which Alpha Xi Delta is a member, reports nearly 5 million women belong to an NPC sorority. And, over the past 10 years, NPC sorority membership at colleges and universities has grown from fewer than 250,000 undergraduate members to more than 415,000 undergraduates.
No doubt, the sorority experience creates a unique community of friendship and support—on campus and beyond.
Yet, despite the popularity of sorority membership and the many lifelong benefits of the experience, it now has become increasingly common for colleges and universities to impose policies aimed at forcing single-sex organizations to become co-ed or to impose other membership policies that would violate a student’s right to freely associate with the organization of her choice.
For the first time in 10 years, Congress is working to reauthorize critical higher education legislation that can impact our organization, and so we must grasp this crucial opportunity to preserve the sorority experience.
We need your help!
Click here to contact Congress to support the inclusion of language in the Higher Education Act that would protect college students’ Freedom of Association rights to join single-sex organizations. Single-sex organizations, like women’s sororities, create an irreplaceable community for students and are more important today than ever. Help us make sure they are protected under the law!
Act now to preserve the sorority experience for Alpha Xi Delta Sisters to come!
